A paragraph is a group of sentences about ONE main idea. A good paragraph has three parts:
2. Topic Sentence
• The first sentence of the paragraph
• States the main idea
• Tells the reader what the paragraph is about
• Example: "Learning a new language has many benefits."
3. Supporting Sentences
• Give details, examples, reasons, or evidence
• Support the topic sentence
• Usually 2-5 sentences
• Example: "First, it can improve your career opportunities. Many companies prefer bilingual employees."
4. Concluding Sentence
• The last sentence of the paragraph
• Summarizes the main point
• Often starts with "In conclusion," "Therefore," or "For these reasons"
• Example: "Therefore, learning a new language is a valuable skill for anyone."
5. Sample Paragraph
Topic Sentence: Regular exercise has many health benefits. Supporting Sentences: First, it helps control weight and prevents obesity. Second, it strengthens the heart and reduces the risk of heart disease. Third, exercise improves mood and reduces stress by releasing endorphins. Concluding Sentence: For these reasons, everyone should try to exercise at least three times a week.
💡 Remember: A paragraph should focus on ONE idea. If you want to talk about a new idea, start a new paragraph!
