📖 Advanced Connectors Rules: Formal vs Informal Linkers
Rule 1: Punctuation with connectors
Semicolon before, comma after: "The results were inconclusive; however, further research is needed." Period before: "The results were inconclusive. However, further research is needed."
Rule 2: Formal vs informal connectors
Informal: but, so, and, also. Formal: nevertheless, therefore, moreover, furthermore. Avoid starting sentences with 'And', 'But', 'So' in formal writing.
Rule 3: 'Notwithstanding' as a preposition
"Notwithstanding the delay, we finished on time." (can also be placed after the noun: "The delay notwithstanding, we finished.")
Rule 4: 'Thereby' + gerund
"She reduced her expenses, thereby saving more money." (not 'thereby saved')
Rule 5: Avoiding repetition
Vary connectors. Don't start every sentence with 'Furthermore'. Use synonyms: Moreover, In addition, Additionally.
💡 In academic writing, overuse of connectors can sound artificial. Use them only when they genuinely clarify logical relationships.
