📖 Subjunctive Mood Rules: Present Subjunctive vs Past Subjunctive
Rule 1: Present Subjunctive – Base form after 'that'
Verb of recommendation/demand + that + subject + base verb (no -s, no past). Example: "I insist that he leave now."
Rule 2: Past Subjunctive – 'Were' for all persons
Use 'were' instead of 'was' in hypothetical if-clauses, wishes, and as if/as though. Example: "If I were taller, I would play basketball." / "I wish she were here."
Rule 3: Negative subjunctive – add 'not' before base verb
"I recommend that he not be late." / "It is essential that you not forget."
Rule 4: Passive subjunctive
"It is important that the letter be sent today." (be + past participle)
Rule 5: Omission of 'that' (formal style)
"I suggest he go to the doctor." (informal omission) – 'that' is optional but more formal.
Rule 6: Subjunctive after 'it is + adjective'
"It is crucial that she be informed immediately."
💡 In British English, the subjunctive is less common than in American English, often replaced by 'should' (e.g., 'I suggest that he should go'). However, the subjunctive remains standard in formal writing.
