📖 Mixed Conditionals Type 3+2 Rules: Past Condition + Present Result

Basic Formula

If + subject + had + past participle, subject + would + base verb.
If I had studied, I would be smarter.

Negative Form

If + subject + hadn't + past participle, subject + wouldn't + base verb.
If she hadn't missed the bus, she wouldn't be late.

Alternative Modals

Could and might can replace would (for possibility).
If I had saved more, I could buy a house now. (possibility)
If he had trained harder, he might be a champion now. (less certain)

Inversion (Formal)

Remove 'if' and invert subject and 'had'.
Had I studied medicine, I would be a doctor.

Key Rules

- The if-clause refers to a past unreal situation.
- The main clause refers to a present unreal result.
- Time references are different (past vs present).
- Never use 'would' in the if-clause.
