📖 Inversion After Negative Adverbials Rules: Word Order Changes

Rule 1: Basic Structure

Negative adverbial + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb.
Example: "Never have I seen such beauty." (auxiliary 'have' before subject 'I')

Rule 2: Present Simple / Past Simple

If no auxiliary verb exists, add 'do/does/did'.
Normal: She rarely visits. Inverted: Rarely does she visit.
Normal: He seldom smiled. Inverted: Seldom did he smile.

Rule 3: With 'Not Only... But Also'

Inversion occurs after 'not only' in the first clause. The second clause remains normal.
Example: "Not only did he arrive late, but he also forgot his keys."

Rule 4: Past Perfect with Hardly/No Sooner

Use 'had' + subject + past participle. 'Hardly' takes 'when', 'no sooner' takes 'than'.
Example: "Hardly had we started when the alarm rang." / "No sooner had she sat down than the phone rang."

Rule 5: With 'Only + phrase'

Only + time/condition + auxiliary + subject + main verb.
Example: "Only after the storm did we realise the damage."

Rule 6: Modal Verbs

Negative adverbial + modal + subject + verb.
Example: "Under no circumstances should you open that door."
💡 Inversion is not used if the negative adverbial is not at the beginning of the clause (e.g., 'I have never seen' is normal).
